WHAT IS SHIATSU?

To gain a sense of what shiatsu looks like there is a video at the bottom of this page.

From the outside, shiatsu looks like a form of body work whereby the practitioner uses gentle touch and dynamic stretches to adjust the client’s physical structure and ease tension and pain felt in the body. However, the experience of Shiatsu is often much more. The touch of a trained practitioner has great depth and it has an effect on every level of being. Shiatsu is a form of therapy in its own right.

BENEFITS

A receiver of shiatsu can experience deep relaxation, tension releasing and pain subsiding. They may also feel lighter in mood, find an insightful new perspective and see a healing image or memory. I often see my clients leaving a session feeling more resourced, alive and free. Over time the benefits can become long lasting and life changing.

Shiatsu and counselling sessions with Dawn have been life changing for me. The experience has opened my eyes to the profound connection between body and mind. I initially went to Dawn looking for help with physical pain but soon realised, with Dawn's guidance, that these pains and aches were often physical manifestations of anxiety and depression. Shiatsu has helped my mental health hugely. Dawn is a warm, skilled, compassionate and empathetic therapist. Highly recommended’. (A shiatsu and Counselling client).

HOW DOES SHIATSU WORK?

Shiatsu is based on the ancient principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the concept of Ki.

Ki, otherwise known as our life force, is felt as our aliveness and when in health it flows through us naturally ebbing and flowing in a system of pathways called meridians.

Sometimes, a life event, prolonged illness, an accident or emotional distress can disturb the flow of our life force and it will begin to trickle instead of flow like a stream. We can feel as though something is not right, emotionally stuck or fixed in a pattern of thinking or behaviour. In the longer term we can experience illness and pain.

A shiatsu practitioner can feel the quality and flow of your life force, and through touch and connection, is able to help you enable its more natural flow once again.
